Almost exactly a year after the construction of the new extension block was officiated, the August 22, 2009 topping up ceremony saw the completion of the wet works of the construction of the newest addition to MCKL when Bishop Dr. Hwa Yung from the Methodist Church in Malaysia added the last bit of cement to the planter box on the rooftop garden.

The sunset event began with the arrival of guests at 5pm, followed by a short program at 5.30pm that included a service, speeches by the bishop and MCKL board of management and CEO, a slideshow depicting the progress of the construction of the new building, and the debut performance of the college song by the choir. The service was held on the first floor of the new building, where the new chapel will be housed.

In his speech during the service, Bishop Dr. Hwa Yung spoke of the MCKL motto ‘Veritas Vincit Omnia’ meaning ‘truth conquers all’, and emphasized on the importance of truth and honesty in life, and MCKL’s role in imparting these values to all who come through its doors:

“For this and other reasons, the Methodist Church is committed to the highest and best traditions in educating the youth of our country…And if you do not believe in such a thing as moral truth, how can there be a place for honesty and integrity in personal and public life?”

After the service, MCKL staff and the management team led guests to the site of the future auditorium, and then to the rooftop garden for the official topping up ceremony and closing prayers. The bishop was then presented with a token of appreciation by MCKL’s CEO, Ms. Moey Yoke Lai.

The event was followed by a reception at the site of the new cafeteria.

Guests included Dato’ Dr. Tan Kee Kwong, Chairman of the MCKL Board of Management, and wife; Dr. Lim Boon Hock, Executive Director of the Council of Education, Methodist Church in Malaysia, and wife; Ms. Yin Kam Yoke, Former Executive Director of the Council of Education, Methodist Church in Malaysia; Dr. Moo Siew Pheng, Mr. Eric Tong and Ms. Tay Choon Neo, members of the Council of Education, Methodist Church in Malaysia; Mr. Gopala Sundaram, member of both the Council of Education, Methodist Church in Malaysia and MCKL Board of Management; Rev. Dr. Mark Chua, a member of the MCKL Board of Management; Mr. Leo Anthony, Technical Committee; Datuk F. Rasammah Bhupalan, former Principal of MCKL; Mrs. Vimala Mathews, Principal of Wesley Methodist School; and Mr. Ho Cheok Fai, Project Architect, CFHO Design Practice.
